Salvo
SALVO - Coastal community along Highway 12 along the Outer Banks in Dare County. Formerly called Clarks or Clarksville. A local legend tells the story of a Union Navy ship that passed the village while sailing north from Fort Hatteras. He asked his crew what the village's name was. They responded that the Union coastal charts had no name for the village. He allegedly responded, "...fire a salvo at it anyway." The name stuck - and when a new post office was established here in 1901, Salvo became its name.
