Purley

The old W.D. Pleasant General Merchandise store along old NC 86 in Purley.

Purley is most likely named after a local resident by the name of Miss Purley Cobb. Purley was served by a U.S. Post Office from 1855-1920. Bright leaf tobacco was first produced here in 1852 on the Slade Farm.

Thanks for posting. However, others may wish to comment on how "Purley" was named. And, Blanch/Blanche residents may have thoughts on where Bright Leaf tobacco was "discovered." Also, the Purley post office was in operation 1855-1920.
