The Wake County community of Carpenter was settled in 1865 by William Carpenter. The town is named after him.  Carpenter is now a part of the Town of Cary and once had a stop on the Durham and Southern Railway that ran from Durham to Dunn.

Carpenter retains some of its rural and railroad past at the Carpenter Farm Supply Company.  In operation since 1885, the feed and hardware store sits just off the busy four-lane NC Highway 55 on Morrisville-Carpenter Road.
